The upcoming new millenium bring together a new era for the Brazilian Triathlon. Consolidate as an olympic sport, is will make its debut on Sidney 2000. The sport will gain more strengh with the Ironman Brazil, a qualifier event for the World Triathlon Championship in Kona, Hawaii. The Ironman Brazil, will take place on the beatiful island of Florianopolis, in the state of Santa Catarina. The most important athletes will be together in Brazil, racing for 45 qualifying slots and a prize purse of US$ 70.000,00. The most important national athlete is Fernanda Keller, with 14 participations on Ironman Hawaii and 5 times 3rd place finisher. This will be the first time that Florianopolis will host the Ironman Brazil. The city has combined perfect conditions to host the event : perfect weather conditions, an international airport, more than 100 hotels, public and private hospitals. The various topographic alternatives make the island an natural wonder and an immediate invitation to sports. Windsurfing at Lagoa, hand gliding or parachuting at Praia Mole, sandboarding at the dunes of Joaquina, mountain biking at the various tracks, trekking at the reserves or shores, the divers become amazed with the marine fauna, and surf, which may be practiced in many of the 100 beaches of the island.
